In the event of a dollar currency crisis (likely), silver will be the perfect substitute/competing currency which can be used to barter for food and other goods as the dollar is no longer able to hold its value. In fact, there are some stores already which allow trading gold or silver for food and other goods and services. Many experts advise against numismatic (collector) coins in favor of bullion coins (such as .999% pure silver rounds). Apparently 90% pure silver dimes are a good choice due to their small denomination.
